Flying and pregnancy

 

It is generally considered safe to fly before pregnancy week 36  for women who have a healthy pregnancy. However you need to still check with your health care professional before flying.

Your  health practitioner may recommend against traveling by air if you have a pregnancy complication that may  be worsened by air travel or require emergency care. The flight duration should also be considered. However most airlines  and health practitioners restrict flying after pregnancy week 36.

 

If your health care provider approves of you flying , the best time time to  travel is in the second trimester if your time is flexible. This is when the risks of common pregnancy emergencies are lowest.

 

When is it not safe to fly

 

There are certain situations in which it is definitely not safe to fly. These include the following :

 

Take these precautions when you fly

  • Check the airline policy about flying
  • Buckle up by fastening the lap belt under your abdomen
  • Promote circulation by taking occasional walks up and down the aisle. Flex and extend your ankles often if you must remain seated.
  • Drink lots of fluids to prevent dehydration.
  • Avoid gassy foods and drinks such as broccoli or carbonated drinks before flying. This can cause discomfort.
  • Plan for emergencies. You have to find out if it is possible  to get obstetric care during your trip.
