Some pregnant women have no changes in appetite during pregnancy. However  for some, the second trimester is the beginning  of insatiable hunger. This change is due to the deamands of the growing baby. It usually start around pregnancy week 17.

If you lost some weight or didn’t gain weight during the first trimester, this is the time to eat and catch up. You have to listen to your body. However you also have to keep in mind the caloric intake during pregnancy.  Most moms need only about 350  more calories per day in the second trimester and about 500 more calories per day towards the end of pregnancy.

 

How to deal with increased appetite during pregnancy

 

  • stay hydrated : Your body needs more fluids now more than ever.  You need to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily and more if its hot outside
  • eat healthy  : You have to make sure you are eating nutritious foods rather than nearly filling your tummy.
  • eat small meals frequently : You have to spread your food throughout the day. Eat small meals frequently than consuming a lot at just one sitting
  • carry snack : Carry healthy snacks such as raisins and or nutritional bars on the go. This is so that when hunger strikes, you will have something healthy to munch on
  • watch your weight : You have to know that as much you have to eat when hungry, over eating and gaining too much weight during pregnancy could be detrimental to your health and that of your baby’s.
