Yes an IUD can be inserted right after childbirth whether you gave birth vaginally or by c-section. It can be done while you are in the delivery room, ideally within 10 minutes after the placenta is delivered.

This was not the case sometime back. Experts were worried that the IUD might not stay in place if inserted before the uterus returned to its original position. As a  result , you had to wait 6 weeks after birth before inserting it.

 

However evidence from other countries were reviewed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and they decided to change the recommendation.

 

They  found out that is was possible for IUD to come out when inserted right after childbirth. However  they decided that women still benefited from the option of inserting early.

 

If get an IUD inserted right after delivery, your caregiver will let you know how to make sure it is properly positioned in the uterus. If it does come out, it can be reinserted during a visit to your healthcare professional’s office.

 

The IUD is effective right  after childbirth. However your health care professional will recommend that you wait until after your postpartum checkup to have sex. This is to make sure that your perineum  and vaginal have healed well enough for a safe and pleasurable sex.
