The body goes though a lot of changes during pregnancy. Some women experience belly button pain. This is common and  more likely to occur as your belly gets bigger especially during the second and third trimesters.

The cause of this pain depends your body shape, how you are carrying your baby and your skin’s elasticity.  Other possible factors such as medical conditions may be the culprit . This pain is usually not dangerous and go away after a while or after delivery.

What causes belly button pain during pregnancy ?

Some of the causes include the following :

• Stretching : Stretching of the skin and muscles during pregnancy can result in irritation of the belly button during the process.
• Pressure from the uterus : As pregnancy progresses , the uterus pops  up and out . This pressure pushes on the abdomen and belly button .
• Umbilical hernia :  This happens when there is too much pressure in the abdomen. You are at higher risk when you are pregnant with multiples or obese. Along with the belly button pain, you may also experience a bulge near the navel, swelling and vomiting.

How to ease belly button pain during pregnancy

This pain may come and go throughout pregnancy as you experience rapid growth. Some women experience it early while for others it gets worse during the  final months of pregnancy .

You can ease the pressure by sleeping on your side and  supporting your belly with pillows to take the load off. You can also apply  soothing pregnancy safe lotions or cocoa butter to  skin that’s itchy and irritated.

When should i call the doctor.

You need to contact your doctor right away if the pain is accompanied by the following :

• fever
• vomiting
• cramping
• swelling
• bleeding
