Excessive thirst during pregnancy can be a sign that you need more fluid intake. It could also be a sign of a serious pregnancy complication. You need to contact your doctor if you have any unusual pregnancy symptoms especially if it is persistent.

What is the possible cause of excessive thirst during pregnancy ?

 

The most common  cause is that you are not taking in enough fluids.  You need more fluid intake during pregnancy. You could also be feeling hot or sweaty. The amniotic sac is filled with fluid to protect the baby.  Filling this sac requires the mother to drink plenty of fluids.

 

Eating salty foods can also increase your desire to drink more fluids.

 

In rare cases, it could be a sign of gestational diabetes.  However you have to know that gestational diabetes is usually asymptomatic that is why every pregnant woman is tested for it. So do not  fret if you experience excessive thirst.

 

Excessive thirst is also a normal reaction to increased blood volume during pregnancy . There  is a substantial increase in blood level during pregnancy. Its as much as 40% increase.  As a result the pregnant woman feels the need to drink more fluids to accommodate the increase in blood volume.

 

How to treat excessive thirst during pregnancy ?

 

You need to drink more fluids. During pregnancy, you need about

10  8-ounce cups of water or other beverages each day.

 

If you are concerned about your excessive thirst, talk to your doctor .
