Metallic taste in the mouth is one of the common early   signs of pregnancy. Although the exact cause is unknown, it is believed to be caused by increasing production of hormones. This symptom tends to get better in the second trimester when hormones start to relax. It also disappears after delivery.

What causes metallic taste in the mouth during pregnancy ?

It is believed to be cause by estrogen which affects our sense of taste. During pregnancy, estrogen levels increase rapidly and then starts to decrease. This causes of series of reaction in the body such as morning sickness, fatigue , mood swings and metallic taste in the mouth.

 

Some other health care professionals  believe that the metallic taste in the mouth is due to toxins released by the  lymph glands during pregnancy  to protect the baby from side effects of different drugs.

 

Others believe that prenatal vitamins and other medications such as antibiotics may leave a metallic taste in the mouth.

 

How can I get rid of the metallic taste in my mouth ?

First of all you need to talk to your health care provider about the any symptoms you are experiencing during pregnancy. He will rule out any serious medical condition. If a vitamin is the cause of the metallic taste in your mouth, you  may need to switch to another medication.

 

These are other ways that have helped pregnant women deal with metallic taste in their mouths.

  • eat or drink citrus fruits such as orange or lemon
  • rinse your mouth with salt water (a teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water)  to neutralize the pH level in your mouth
  • foods made of vinegar such as pickles have high acidity and may help neutralize your mouth pH
  • whenever you brush your teeth, it is essential to  brush your tongue
  • chewing sugarless gum may help
