Fibroids are benign growths of muscle and connective tissue of the uterus that  are a common occurrence and affect about  60-80 percent of women. Although they usually do not present any symptoms, their presence can cause problems such as painful sex.

Depending on the size, form and number, fibroids can present some symptoms and painful intercourse is one of them. Other symptoms such as irregular or heavy bleeding and muscle cramping can interfere with sex.  Large fibroids can create a sensation of pressure  that interferes with the enjoyment of sex. If fibroids are close to the cervix, they do not only cause pain, but bleeding during intercourse. This can make sex uncomfortable and lead to decreased libido. Fibroids can also make a woman look or feel pregnant and in the worse scenario, result in infertility , miscarriage or premature birth.

Imaging test of the uterus ( transvaginal ultrasound or even an MRI of the pelvis)  will need to be done to determine the treatment option for uterine fibroids.  Knowing the characteristics of the fibroid is important to understand the best treatment option.

NOTE

Fibroids are treatable and shouldn’t deny you the ability to  enjoy sex. There are both surgical and non surgical treatments available.

If you have a fibroid  or suspect you do, talk to your doctor.
