Some of the causes of a little blood in the baby’s diaper include the following :

  • the baby may have swallowed blood from a cracked nipple during breastfeeding
  • scratch or crack in the skin of the  baby’s  rectum as a result of dry, hard or large bowel movement
  • a female infant may have bloody discharge in her diaper due to the withdrawal of maternal hormones after delivery
  • a male infant may be bleeding a little from a healing circumcision
  • diaper rash can also lead to bleeding if its severe

NOTE

Blood in a diaper is a problem only if bleeding becomes heavy and persistent or only if the baby appears ill, has high fever or bruises easily. It is important to mention any blood in your baby’s diaper to your pediatrician just to be on a safe side.
