A gentle c-section is also known as a family centered c-section. These procedures allows for small changes so that you and partner feel a part of the process.  A gentle c-section is offered by some hospitals.

What is the difference between a typical c-section and a gentle c-section ?

During a c-section you usually lie on your back , strapped to an operating table . A screen is then raised above your waist so that you don’t see the incision being made.

If you’d like to be a part of the process, you may ask a nurse to slightly lower the screen so that you can see your baby but nothing else.  You may catch a glimpse of your baby if he is healthy before being taken to pediatric care.

Hospitals that offer gentle c-section do the following :

  • you can see your baby being born by
    • being propped up slightly so you can view the birth through a clear plastic drape
    • asking for the drape to be lowered earlier  and farther so that you can see your baby being delivered (A solid drape still blocks your view of the surgical incision)
  • the delivery of your baby can be done slowly so that  it allows  time for the chest to be squeezed on the way out just as in  vaginal birth  to clear the lungs of fluid.
  • your baby is placed on your chest and covered with a warm towel right after childbirth for instant skin to skin contact. The baby may even be allowed to stay for the rest of the surgery and accompany you to the recovery room
  • your hands are not strapped down. Your IV is put in your non dominant hand so that you are free to care for your baby. The EKG which monitors your baby’s heartbeat is placed on your back instead of belly to prevent it from getting in your way
  • you may have the option of less sedation after the surgery so that you are more alert to care for your baby

What are the advantages of a gentle c-section

Being able to view the birth of your baby during a gentle c-section makes you feel like you’re participating in the process. Research also indicates that immediate skin to skin contact helps regulate the baby’s body temperature and heart rate. It also facilitates bonding and successful breastfeeding.

It is very essential for new moms to be able to hold and comfort her newborn right after birth.  Newborns usually stop crying when they hear the warmth of their mother’s skin or hear her voice .
