What causes bad breath ?

There are a number of causes of halitosis, some of which include the following :

Poor oral hygiene : If your child doesn’t brush and floss  regularly,it can result in bad breath. The gums can be irritated if plaque is not brushed away. The tongue can also harbor bacteria that produce foul odors and bad breath. It is important to make sure that your child is brushing her tongue as well.

Dry mouth : Saliva helps to cleanse the mouth. Xerostomia may occur when the child is producing less than normal saliva. This contributes to halitosis.

Certain medical conditions : Certain conditions such as sinus infection, tonsillitis  and  seasonal allergies  can cause halitosis. Some children with gastroesophageal reflux disease also have foul breath.

Foreign object : When a child places a foreign object such as a tiny toy or  food particle in her nose, it can cause foul breath.

Certain foods :  Foods  with strong odor such as garlic and onions or specific spices can have an effect of the freshness of breath.

Breathing through the mouth :When a child breathes through her mouth because of stuffed  nose or as a sleep habit, it prevents saliva from washing bacteria away and this contributes to bad breath.

Medications : The way some medications  break down in the body can lead to bad breath.

Mouth infections : Foul breath can result from  cavities, plaque buildup, mouth sores or oral surgery .

How can bad breath be prevented ?

You can help your child avoid this condition by developing an oral routine care. This includes :

  • having your child brush her teeth daily with an  ADA accepted fluoride toothpaste to promote fresh breath. It is important to supervise young children so that they brush  well and not swallow the tooth paste. Make sure the child cleans her tongue as well
  • floss daily in order to remove odor causing food particles from the teeth
  • remember to get a new tooth brush every few months. This is because dull bristles cannot effectively remove plaque and debris from the teeth.
  • you should also take your child to her regular checkups and professional cleaning with the dentist.

Should i use a mouth wash

Mouth wash will only mask the problem. Again if your child isn’t pre-school age yet, she will have problems switching and spitting. Just make sure your child brushed at least twice  a day.
