Is salt safe during pregnancy ?

You don’t have to cut back on your salt (sodium) intake during pregnancy unless advised by your healthcare provider. Sodium causes the retention of fluid which is actually helpful during pregnancy. Your fluid requirement during pregnancy is increased during pregnancy . This is to support the  increase in blood volume and the constant replenishing of the amniotic fluid which is the fluid that surrounds the baby. As a result moderate  intake is actually beneficial during pregnancy.

You have to be sure it’s iodized  and not sea salt. This is because the body needs the extra iodine to prevent thyroid deficiencies during pregnancy.

NOTE

While sodium  intake is okay during pregnancy, you should know that too much of everything is bad. Over-indulging in it  can be bad. Discuss with your doctor the amount of sodium  that is recommended for your situation.
