The  contraceptive sponge is a plastic foam which contains spermicides. This saucer-shaped device is a barrier form of birth control. Pregnancy can occur as soon as you stop using it. You should note that the contraceptive sponge will not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. When used correctly and consistently, this birth control has a failure rate of about 9%.

How does the contraceptive sponge work ?

 

The sponge covers the cervix and blocks sperms from entering the uterus. It also contains spermicides that kill the sperms. The sponge also absorbs sperms.

 

Are there any side effects ?

 

It has been reported that some women who used the contraceptive sponge have experienced toxic shock syndrome. This is a rare but serious life threatening condition. It is recommended that the sponge should not be left in the vagina for more than 30 hours. You should not use this contraceptive if you are menstruating .

According to the American pregnancy association, the FDA removed the sponge from the market in 1994 for health reasons. However it was recently re approved by the FDA. So it may not be available at all places
