Heightened sense of smell is one of the pregnancy symptoms experienced by almost all pregnant women. Many expectant moms develop aversions to food, body odor  and perfume. This increased sensitivity to smell  usually starts in the first trimester.

What causes heightened sense of smell during pregnancy ?

 
Changes is hormones such as estrogen level is responsible for this pregnancy symptom. Heightened sense of smell is usually accompanied by morning sickness.

 

How can I manage heightened sense of smell during pregnancy ?

 

The first thing you need to do to cope with this pregnancy symptom is the avoid smells that trigger nausea and vomiting.

 

You should also try to open windows and doors before you cook to keep fresh air blowing through the area. Air fresheners that don’t interfere with your gag reflexes can also help.

 

Stay away from smokers and strong chemicals.

 

Wash your clothing often to remove any odors that may linger.

 

NOTE
It is impossible to tell which smell will bother you during pregnancy. Your favorite food may make you nauseous during pregnancy. However you should know that heightened sense of smell is usually common the first trimester when morning sickness is at it’s peak.
