Essential oils are concentrated , aromatic liquids extracted from plants. Most essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy as long as you are careful with them. However some are toxic when used on the skin and therefore should not be used during pregnancy. It is important not to swallow essential oils.

Essential oils are used in a therapy known as aromatherapy. This therapy uses the aroma producing oils to treat diseases. The oil is mixed with another substance such as alcohol, oil or lotion. It is then put on the skin, sprayed in the air or inhaled.

 

These oils work like medicine once inside the body. There is therefore the possibility of it  passing through the placenta and reaching the baby. However, the exact effect of essential oils on a baby is not known because they have only been studied in animals.

 

Which essential oils are safe during pregnancy ?

 

Oils that are safe to use during pregnancy include the following :

  • lavender
  • peppermint
  • citrus oils such as tangerine
  • geranium
  • spearmint
  • tea tree oil
  • German chamomile
  • eucalyptus

Which essential oils are not safe to use during pregnancy ?

 

Avoid using these essential oils during pregnancy.

  • rosemary -this may cause contractions and increase blood pressure
  • jasmine and clary –  may trigger contractions
  • basil – may cause abnormal cell development
  • sage and rosemary – may cause uterine bleeding
  • Jupiter berry – may affect your kidneys
  • nutmeg – may cause hallucinations and react with pain relieving drugs in labor

 

There is a controversy over the use of lavender essential oils during pregnancy. Lavender is used to regulate menstruation. However this does not mean it will raise your risk of a miscarriage. To ease your mind, it is better to wait until the second trimester before using lavender essential oil.

 

Who should not use essential oils during pregnancy ?

 

It is better to stay clear of essential oils during pregnancy if you have .

  • vaginal bleeding in previous pregnancy
  • history of miscarriages
  • heart problems
  • epilepsy
  • diabetes
  • blood clotting problems
  • thyroid, liver or kidney disease

 
NOTE : It is essential to talk to your doctor before using any essential oil during pregnancy.
