Heartburn is a common complaint during pregnancy. It is usually harmless but uncomfortable. TUMS can be used to relieve heartburn. However many women wonder if it is safe to use TUMS during pregnancy.

What is heartburn ?

 

Heartburn is also called acid indigestion or acid reflux. It is a burning sensation of the esophagus as a result of stomach contents that comes back up from the stomach. This is caused by hormonal and physicals changes that occur in during pregnancy.

 

TUMS during pregnancy ?

 

Antacids such as TUMS  provide fast and quick relief for heartburn. TUMS is safe to take during pregnancy. It also adds calcium to the body. The body needs between 1,000mg and 1,300mg of elemental calcium daily during pregnancy.

 

If you are taking iron supplements, you have to take it at a different time than you take TUMS. It is recommended that you space the doses at least one to two hours apart to get the full benefits of  each medicine.

 

NOTE : You need to consult your health care provider before taking antacids that contain sodium bicarbonate.

 

What other ways can heartburn be  prevented during pregnancy ?

 

These lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of heartburn.

  • avoid drinking large quantities of fluids during  meals. It is better to  drink in between meals
  • don’t lie down immediately after eating
  • avoid foods that cause gastrointestinal distress such as  chocolate, acidic foods such as tomato juice and citrus fruits and spicy or fatty foods
  • eat several meals throughout the day instead of  3 large meals
  • don’t eat close to bed time
  • try to chew gum after eating. It stimulates the salivary glands to produce saliva which neutralizes acids
