Round ligament pain is a sharp pain often felt at the lower abdomen or groin in one or both sides. It is common in the second trimester. This pain is a normal part of pregnancy  and occurs because of the different changes your body goes through during pregnancy.

What causes round ligament pain ?

 
Round ligaments are  part of several ligaments that surround and support the uterus as it grows during pregnancy. These ligaments  contract and relax but more slowly. Any movement or activity such as laughing, coughing , sneezing and moving quickly from a sitting position to a standing position stretches these ligaments and cause them to contract quickly. This causes sudden pain which lasts for a few seconds.

 

How can I alleviate round ligament pain ?

 
Rest is the best way to alleviate the discomfort of round ligament pain. Slowly changing position stretches the ligament more slowly and alleviate any pain. Stretching exercises or prenatal yoga can also help. The most common exercise is placing your hands and knees on the floor, lowering your head and pushing your backside into the air.
