You are pregnant !!!! Excitement and emotions run high. You are overwhelmed with thoughts of how to  have a healthy pregnancy and baby. The first trimester of pregnancy is very crucial for baby development. These tips can guide you through a healthy pregnancy.

What should I do during the first trimester ?

 

Make an appointment with your health care provider : Book your first prenatal appointment. During this appointment,  your medical history will be reviewed and your blood pressure will be checked. You may have to do a few blood and urine tests. You may also  be advised on issues such as  maintaining a healthy weight , taking care of yourself and eating a healthy diet.

 

Take your vitamins : Now is the time to take your prenatal vitamin if you haven’t already started. Choose prenatal vitamins which contain at least 0.4 milligrams (400 micrograms)  of folic acid. Folic acid is very essential for preventing neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Your prenatal vitamins should also contains at least 30 milligrams of iron .

 

Eat healthy : You need to eat a balanced diet to help you get all the necessary nutrients for healthy development of your baby. You also need to stay away from certain foods such as  unpasteurized products, raw or uncooked egg and raw shell-fish during this time.

 

Moderate exercise : Staying active during pregnancy is a good way to maintain your weight and help you deal with the physical and mental requirements of pregnancy. However, you should not over exercise. Moderate and gently exercises can help. Ask  your health care provider which exercises are good during pregnancy.

 

Get enough rest : Fatigue is a common complaint during  the first trimester. This is as  result of your body coping with the hormonal and physical changes during pregnancy. Try to get at  least 8 hours of sleep at night. You should also take naps if possible.

 

Oral health : Oral health is very important during pregnancy. Gum disease may affect the health of your baby . It is also known to be linked to preterm labor. Brush your teeth daily  and visit your dentist at least once during pregnancy.

 

What should I avoid during the first trimester ?

 

Don’t smoke Smoking  during pregnancy can result in pregnancy complications such as miscarriage and premature rapture of amniotic sac. Chemicals from cigarette can harm the baby. It is important to avoid both active and passive smoking during pregnancy.

 

Don’t drink : Alcohol can reach the blood stream and increase your risk for a miscarriage. Alcohol can cause your baby to have various serious health issues known as fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Fetal alcohol syndrome   can seriously harm your baby’s development, both mentally and physically.

 

Reduce stress : Stress can affect your baby’s health and increase your chance for a miscarriage. Engage in relaxation techniques to relieve stress.

 

Don’t use saunas and hot tubs : You have to stay away from saunas and hot tubs. The high water temperature can increase your body temperature and harm the developing baby due to dehydration.

 

Be careful of medication : You should always consult your doctor before taking any medication during pregnancy. Even over the counter medications can harm your developing baby.

 

Don’t go on a diet : Don’t try to go on a diet during pregnancy. It can cause deficiency of essential vitamins and minerals that are needed for the healthy development of your baby. Going on diet should only be directed by you doctor.
