The umbilical cord functions as a connection between the baby and the placenta during pregnancy. It brings blood and nutrients to the baby. During the latter stages of pregnancy , the umbilical cord  passes antibodies on to your baby, thus benefiting his immune system. However after your baby is delivered, the cord is of no use.

When is the umbilical cord cut ?

The umbilical cord is cut after the baby is delivered. However it doesn’t necessarily have to be cut immediately. It is possible that leaving the umbilical cord connected for a longer than one minute may have some health benefits.

Babies who had their cords clamped later after delivery had a high initial hemoglobin concentration, a greater iron storage 3 to 6 months after birth and a greater birth weight.

You should also note that most babies whose  cords were clamped later needed  phototherapy due to jaundice. Even though there may be benefits associated with clamping and cutting the cord later, it may be necessary to cut the cord before the baby’s shoulders are exposed during labor , if the cord is wrapped around his neck.

Who is allowed to cut the cord ?

You should let your doctor know if you or your partner want to help clamp and cut the cord. However if you are uncomfortable doing it, your doctor may do it for you.

A small section of the umbilical cord ( a small, blue/purple stump )  is left attached to the baby’s  belly  . In about 1 to 2 weeks, the stump should fall off on its own.
