Your baby is finally here. You have settled into your normal routine. You are now wondering how to lose the extra weight you gained during pregnancy.  It  will take some time for you to return to your pre-pregnancy weight. You will lose a significant amount of weight  after childbirth, subtracting the weight of the baby as well as weight of placenta, amniotic fluid and blood.

After this,  you will still have some weight but it will be coming off  gradually. All the cells retained during pregnancy as well as the fluid from extra blood in your body will find a way to get out. You will realize that you urinate often  and sweat a lot. There are  other things you can do to help you lose the water weight.

 

How to lose water weight after childbirth

 

Drink lots of water :  These best way to lose more water weight is to drink more water. You should aim at 10 to 12  glasses of water a day. If you are dehydrated, your  body will retain more water. As a new mom , you may find yourself thirstier than before especially if you are breastfeeding. It will be a good idea to drink a glass of water every time you nurse.

 

Reduce your sodium  intake : Sodium encourages retention of water so you need  to limit your intake. It is important to stay clear of salt shakers and take a look at processed , boxed foods. Even though these may be convenient for new moms, they may not be the best. Fresh vegetables and fruits and high protein  options like greek yogurt are the best.

 

Exercise : This is a good way to stay in shape and lose weight in general . It can also help you lose water weight through sweating.

 

Visit the sauna : The sauna is designed to make you sweat and this is a quicker way of losing water weight.

 

Check your medications : Some medications or supplements encourage water retention. Ask your doctor about the side effects of the medications  you’re taking .
