X-rays are generally considered safe during pregnancy  according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. Even though x-rays have been linked to an increased risk of cancer particularly leukemia, the risk is very small. X-rays  should be done when the benefits outweigh the risks. They give your doctor  important and lifesaving information about a medical condition.

Are all x-rays safe during pregnancy ?

Even though not all x-rays are safe during pregnancy, most pose little or no risk. Dental x-rays  hardly expose any part of your body except the teeth . X-rays of the arms, legs and chest also does not pose much risk. However when it involves your torso such as abdomen, stomach, pelvis, lower back and kidneys, there is an increased risk of exposure to the uterus. Your should notify your health care provider if you are pregnant and need an x-ray.

I found out I was pregnant after I had an x-ray. What next ?

You don’t have to do anything. The risk from radiation is so small that most doctors will treat the pregnancy as normal. However if you have any concerns, talk to your doctor about it.

Will an x-ray have any adverse effect on my baby ?

No single diagnostic x-ray has a radiation dose high enough to cause harm to the developing baby. You should however let your doctor know if you are pregnant.

Is it possible to have another test instead of an x-ray ?

You may have an ultrasound instead of an x-ray. Ultrasounds are your best alternative and pose no risk to your baby.  Magnetic Resonance Imaging MRI is also safe during the first trimester of pregnancy. However, sometimes an x-ray is what needs to be done to properly manage your health condition.
