What is hyperemesis gravidarum ?

Hyperemesis gravidarum  is a condition characterized by extreme, persistent nausea and vomiting especially thoroughly the first 3 months of pregnancy. This condition can also lead to dehydration and weight loss. You may need hospitalization if your case is severe.

What causes hyperemesis gravidarum?

 

Hyperemesis gravidarum is caused by the rapidly rising blood levels of hormones such as  HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) and estrogen. It may also be due to multiple pregnancy or abnormal  tissue growth that is not a true pregnancy know as hydatidiform mole .

 

Am I at risk of hyperemesis gravidarum?

 

The following conditions put you at risk of  hyperemesis gravidarum :

  • first time mother
  • being overweight
  • hyperemesis gravidarum during previous pregnancy
  • expecting multiples
  • presence of hydatidiform mole
