Reye’s syndrome is a rare but serious medical condition. This condition can cause acute brain damage and liver function problems. Reye’s syndrome is usually found is children ages 4 to 12 who are recovering from a viral infections such as chicken pox and flu.

The exact cause of this  disease is not known . However it seem to be triggered by the use aspirin to treat viral infections in children. This disease has become very rare these days because aspirin is no longer recommended for routine use in children.

What are the symptoms of Reye’s syndrome ?

 
Children with this condition get sick suddenly. They begin to vomit for hours and this may last for hours.  The child then becomes very aggressive and irritable. As condition progresses , the child may have trouble staying alert or awake.

Other symptoms include :

• lethargy
• confusion
• nausea and vomiting
• mental changes
• decreased level on consciousness
• seizures
• weakness or paralysis in the arms or legs
• diarrhea and rapid breathing in babies

 
Other symptoms you may experience include :

• hearing loss
• vision changes
• abnormal speech
• severe muscle weakness

How is Reye’s syndrome treated ?

 
There is no cure for Reye’s syndrome. The health care professional will monitor brain pressure, blood gases  and blood acid-base balance  (pH) .

Treatment include the following :

• fluids by IV to provide electrolytes and glucose
• breathing support  such as breathing machine if needed
• steroids to reduce swelling in the brain
• diuretics to get rid of extra fluid
• anti seizure medications for seizures

 
Even though there is no cure for Reye’s syndrome, there is a possibility for complete recovery if the child receives  proper treatment early. Quick diagnosis and early treatment is the key to recovering.

How can i protect my child from Reye’s syndrome ?

 
Not giving your child aspirin is the best way to protect your child from this disease. Do not give aspirin to anyone 19 years old or younger. If your child has a virus, consult your doctor about the best medication to give the child.

Do not take any medication containing aspirin during breastfeeding. The drug can pass through breast milk.

Read labels carefully before giving any over the counter medication to your child.  Many over the counter medications including some antacids, anti-nausea and cold and sinus medications contain aspirin.  Be on the look out for the words below. They may be used instead of aspirin. They include

•  salicylate
• acetylsalicylate
• acetylsalicylic acid
• salicylamide
• phenyl salicylate

 
Always ask  your doctor before giving your child any medication.
