How does a pregnancy test tell if you are pregnant or not

A pregnant test detects  the presence of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin hCG in your blood or urine. This hormone is produced by the placenta shortly after the embryo attaches to the lining  of the uterus. The hormone builds up rapidly  in your body in the first few days of pregnancy.

How long should you wait before taking a pregnancy test ?

Most health care professionals recommend that you wait until the first day you miss your period to take a home pregnancy test. This is usually 2 weeks after conception. However some home pregnancy tests  are more sensitive than others and can be taken early.

A blood test is more sensitive than a home pregnancy test and can be taken 7 to 12 days after you conceive.  It is  possible that these tests may be done too  early and give a false negative result. If you had a negative test result and your still do not start your period, another test should be performed.

How accurate can home pregnancy tests be ?

These test are about 97 % accurate when used the correct way. You need to follow instructions carefully to make sure the test is done the right way. If you do everything right and the test comes back negative, wait a few days and try again if you really do believe you are pregnant. Your body needs time for the hormone to rise to a high  enough level to be detected by the test.
