Your baby needs a regular checkup during the first 2 years of his life even if  he is  healthy. During these check ups , your baby’s growth, weight gain, health and vaccinations as well as whether the baby is meeting the normal developmental goals will be evaluated.

Scheduling your baby’s checkups .

 
Most babies will have their first checkup within a few weeks of life. These checkups are to make sure that your baby’s development is on track. They also help your doctor to address areas of concern.

 

The typical schedule for your baby’s well-being check up is at follows :

  • 3-5 days
  • I month
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 12 months
  • 15 months
  • 18 months
  • 24 months

 
Different health care providers may have different schedules and routines. You may also need extra visits if a problem is discovered.

 

What to a expect during your baby’s  check up

 

During the baby’s check ups ,the doctor will look out for different things such as the following.

 

Growth chart :  Your baby’s weight, height and head circumference will be measured and plotted on a chart. This is to compare your baby’s growth to others at the same age.

 

Physical examination :  The provider will do a thorough  physical exam from head to toe to look for signs that your baby is healthy. He will also check if the baby is meeting the developmental goals.

 

Vaccinations : Depending on your baby’s age, he will need different vaccination at his checkups.

 

Nutrition : The doctor will give advice about breastfeeding and the essential nutrients  the baby needs for proper growth and development. As the child grows, the doctor will ask about what he eats.

 

Tests : During the first year, your baby will be tested for anemia. This is done with just a simple finger prick test. Depending on where you live, you  may be ask to do a blood test for lead poisoning or a tuberculosis skin test.

 

General concerns : Your doctor will discuss what you should expect from your baby in terms of growth. He will also discuss important issues such as how to make your home baby proof and how to interact with your child. This is the time to ask the provider any questions you have.

 

NOTE

You should always contact your doctor if you have any concerns even if it is not time for his regular check up. Call your doctor right away if your baby experiences the following :

  • diarrhea
  • yellowish skin
  • no stool
  • fever
  • vomits
  • feeds poorly
  • fewer than 4 wet diapers in 24 hours
  • anything that is unusual or concerns you
